On the drive home, I ask Gary what his problem with Scott was.
“I know people. I think he’s hiding something, that’s all. I’ve used that phony phone call trick myself. Scarlet should stay on her toes. That’s all I’m saying.”
“You heard Corky, Scarlet’s not even interested. Although I can’t imagine why not.”
“Oh, she’s interested. You girls were all falling all over yourselves for the guy.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Oh, Scott, you’re so funny!” Gary says in a high-pitched voice.
“Jealous?”
“Not even a little. Anyway, you should tell Scarlet to be careful.”
“Like she’ll listen to me. Everyone is always so worried about Scarlet. She’s a big girl, she can take care of herself.”
“What do you mean? You spend half of your life fretting over your sister’s every move.”
“Maybe I’m tired of taking care of everyone.”
