I leave Scarlet’s apartment, chastising myself. What am I doing? I totally messed up. When I left my business card, I saw a book on her nightstand. The bookmark was a boarding pass from December to Bentonville, Arkansas. What was she doing there in December? I hate when I do stupid stuff like this, not thinking with my brain. In need of advice, I call Kelly.

“Hey, man, I was just thinking about you. How’s the Sherlock Holmes gig working out?”

      “I screwed up Kelly.”

“Well now, that was quick! What’d ya’ do?”

“I slept with a woman who’s involved with the case.”

“Thinking with junior again, huh? So, how bad is it?”

      “I don’t know.”

“Can you blow it off or…are you into her?”

      “I don’t know.”

“You better figure it out quick. I’m assuming you called because you want my advice?”

      “Yeah.”

“Quit now before you dig yourself a deeper hole.”

      “Thanks, Kelly.”

      “Take care, brother.”

He’s right. I have to call it off. I’ll do it tonight before things get any more complicated. She knows I’m short term. It shouldn’t be a big deal.
