I’m so thankful bookstores still exist. When e-books emerged we all worried about the fate of books. Even as my own e-book outsold my paperback, I wondered, would physical books become a thing of the past?
As a library enthusiast, and lover of turning actual pages, I held fast to my faith that books would indeed survive.
More and more, I hear from readers that they like holding a physical book, the weight of it, the way it feels in their hands, dog-earring the pages, the smell of the paper, and the sound of silence without distractions, lost in the story.
My main issue is focus while reading an e-book. There’s instagram, with all of those tempting animals doing cute things posts…and email…and text messages…and all of those endless, very distracting apps.
Heck, it’s hard enough to carry on a conversation today without being drawn to the toxic lure of the cell phone. It’s our everyday addiction, an additional appendage, without which, we are virtually lost.
I still love disconnecting from everything electronic to escape into a book.
So this past weekend, sitting amongst a sea of novels, watching couples peruse the shelves, and families headed to story time, and young readers with arms weighted down with newfound treasures, my heart soared…knowing, in this good company, books are safe for now.
Thanks for reading and keep writing (& reading!)
