It’s that time of year again when the tax documents are flooding in. Just the word tax can cause anxiety. Am I right? Before you set aside your W2 or 1099 for tax filing purposes, consider this. These documents offer an excellent opportunity for career insight. They also allow for self-reflection.

Over the course of my career, I’ve evaluated the earnings, withholding, and taxable income on these documents. In doing so I’ve become quite reflective about these somber summaries of my prior year in review.

“Boy, I worked hard this past year! Is that really all I earned?”

“Gasp! I didn’t have enough Federal or State taxes withheld. I need to make an adjustment for this year.”

“Is that really all I saved? I need to reevaluate the percentage I set aside in my 401k.”

Or finally…

“I need a new job!”

The last thought is often based on several factors like earnings, overall job dissatisfaction or mental health. Or you fear that time is running out. You worry about not ever enjoying the career of your dreams.

What if deep down you’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur? Meanwhile your current, steady paycheck has you locked in a dispassionate position. Do you daydream of doing something entirely different than what you’re doing now? Are you waiting because change requires retraining or means you’ll need to start a side hustle?

When reviewing your W2 or 1099, pay attention to your thoughts. They can be a wake up call to heed your inner hopes and dreams. If you’ve been unhappy for some time, the winter blues can make the issue more prevalent. The beginning of a new year can be the ideal time to find and follow necessary steps. Make sure you will not have this same conversation with yourself at this time next year.

Consider consulting an independent career coach or counselor for guidance. Talk to friends and family members who have made similar career shifts. Contemplate whether the change you need requires a large or a small adjustment. This can help you feel as though you’re moving ahead and not merely standing still.
